When the raw materials needed (e.g. Frozen Orb) to craft (like for example, a Sapphire Spellthread) are expensive in the auction house, there’s no other way to find great bargains than in the trade channel.
In my server Frozen Orbs can go as high as 70-80g. But my cheap self only wants to buy it at 45-55g which is the cheapest I’ve seen in the AH, so I look in the trade channel instead.
FYI, don’t start spamming in the trade channel, potential sellers getting annoyed is the last thing you want to happen. Do not look desperate with your “WTB FROZEN ORB” or else people may take advantage of your desperation and put a higher price on the orb.
You’re lucky if you’re able to spot someone with “WTS FROZEN ORB”. Whisper them right away with the price you like. For example “I’ll buy 50g”. Most likely they will agree, especially those who do not check the price in the AH frequently. Invite them and make your trade. Ask them if they have more, tempting them to sell their orbs to you (because they need money asap!). Add them to your friends list and remember he/she’s your contact for orbs. Be nice, say thank you. Congratulations, you have just made a possible long term seller of frozen orbs. Maintaining a good relationship with them is vital if you want to keep getting cheap orbs.
Another technique I tried is going to the farming places and chat on general if anyone is willing to sell their items. For example, I go to Sholazar Basin (because that’s the miner’s haven) and chat on general “WTB Saronite ore 21g/stack Eternal earth 6g/each”. It saves them the trouble of going to the AH, and you’re already beating your competition waiting for these farmers in the trade channel to offer their goods.
Waiting in cities/areas for potential sellers is indeed boring. A good technique to combat killer boredom is to put your WoW in windowed mode, and go do something else. Surf, watch a movie, chat with someone, do your work (if you’re in the office lol) and from time to time check out the trade channel. You’ll be saving a lot from the raw materials, and hence earning more from your sold crafted item.
