Potion Mastery spec worth it?
Being a pot master always remind me of something else besides the World of Warcraft. This is one of the reasons my specialty in alchemy is potion mastery, thinking there’s a lot of money in it because you know, it’s pot! Having a fascination for “stoner flicks”, it excites me every time I make a pot and selling it to other people. Steering away from writing a “stoner” post that may get me investigated further for drug trafficking, apparently, not all potions are worth crafting for profit.
Potion Master Severus Snape: "Hi, I'm too drugged to move my face, so I'll just pretend to be angry 24/7"
Runic Mana Potion is one of those hard to sell pots for several reasons. First, anyone can obtain Runic Mana Potion from mob drops, meaning they can just sell that for whatever price because they got it for free. Wowhead prices it at 5 gold each but lucky people who just got it from mob drops can sell it for 2g. If you just bought the mats and crafted it, obviously you can’t sell it around 2 gold. So you have to wait until the cheap pots are all bought out. Second, who the hell still uses Runic Mana Potion? With the 1 pot per battle limit, and the buffing of mana regen of casters, the only place I could think of needing a handy-dandy mana potion is TOTC Hard mode (I’m a healer btw, a bad one). WOTLK really made a low blow on alchemists who made their fortune back in BC by selling loads of mana potions.
Runic Healing Potions suffer a similar fate. I remember back in BC there were raid encounters that require you to bring a healing potion to aid the healers. But now in WOTLK, there is quite no need for these potions yet. However, I don’t quite understand why people who are about to die in a raid don’t even consider drinking a healing potion. Is it that fun to blame the healers for deaths? Anyhow, these pots don’t sell much anymore. Characters that’ll be willing to buy these are the battleground-savvy ones who love to waste money on potions while having 3v1s, whose species is quite rare.
Luckily, mother WOTLK nature also provides new herbs that we can mix to make powerful potions: Potion of Speed, increasing haste rating by 500 for 15 seconds, is used all the time by melee dps while Potion of Wild Magic, increases critical rating by 200 and spell power by 200 for 15 seconds, is used by caster dps. If you can’t differentiate those two gold-maker pots properly, think of these pots this way: the effect of potion of speed is “speed, whizz, billy, sulphate, etc” making you bursting with energy while Potion of Wild Magic is “LSD, acid, trips, etc” making you hallucinate that you can hurl bolts of lightning. Still wondering where Blizzard gets its unlimited resource of ideas for the whole World of Warcraft?
Raw materials for these pots aren’t quite expensive to obtain. For both potions, pygmy oil is required which is dirt cheap if you buy pygmy fish instead and squeeze it on your own giving you a chance to make 2 pygmy oil . For adder’s tongue and lichbloom, buy them, farm them, or steal them, whatever makes you happy.
From experience, Potion of Speed is the best selling pot. Potion of Wild magic does have some buyers, but not as fast selling as Potion of Speed. I guess casters also prefer the most cost-effective drug and got hooked with its addicting effect. Yes, flasks are expensive but it has a 1 hour duration. On the other hand, these pots have to be chugged every battle for max dps, so hope everyone wipes.
I forgot to mention the best part of being a potion master. While brewing your favorite potion, sometimes you can make x2, x3, x4 or even x5 for the materials of one, making you the real deal Speed dealer. Worth it? With most alchemists specd as elixir master and lowering the price of flasks, love it!

don’t forget Indestructible potions! tanks pop those babies on a lot of the fights these days (especially the heroic crusader raids) that their stack runs out before they even know it!
Nice idea alarcon! I have no idea tanks chug those indestructible potions like there’s no tomorrow. Maybe because I’ve never been a tank T_T.
It’s also used by dps warriors seeing the Armored to the Teeth talent: Increases attack power by 3 for every 108 armor. That’s +97AP.
Wow Nice tip Emme. Thanks warriors!
good tip alarcon. my main is a warrior we clear 25 toc every week (in one day)
